Glamour Magazine's reputation took a hit as Amy Schumer voiced her disappointment and concern over being featured in the magazine's, "Chic at Any Size" special targeted at plus size women (16 and up). It featured other women such as Ashley Graham and Melissa McCarthy, two amazing women who do great work for the body-positive movement and are making waves in plus size fashion.
Amy Schumer, however, was not flattered or excited about being featured in this magazine, and voiced her discontent over Twitter and Instagram, saying "I go between a size six and an eight. Young girls see my body type thinking that is plus size?” Although some have called this statement from Schumer a step back for the plus size community and claimed she is anti plus-size, Schumer's anger over this issue is completely justified and correct.
The average american woman goes between a size 12-14, and plus size is considered a size 16. However, in the fashion industry, models are placed into this category at a size eight, and sometimes even size six. We are so used to what we see in the media and take that to be normal, and that is simply not true. Women are beautiful at all sizes, and beauty isn't something that is solely based on appearance although that is often how we first judge it. Schumer makes a great point in stating that labeling her body type as plus size is simply reinforcing the often unrealistic goals set for young girls by the fashion industry. Her statement is not that plus size is bad or unattractive -- I mean look at Ashley Graham -- but rather that we need to address this problem that is so pervasive in the every day lives of women.
