5 Things College Has Taught Me

The Things I'm Glad I Learned

5 Things College Has Taught Me

1. It's okay to look stunning or like a hobo.

There have been so many days where I want to look really good, and then there are days where I just don’t feel like doing anything. I love doing my makeup and hair, but I don’t always feel like doing it. In college, you don’t have to be put together to go class… most days it takes me longer to do nothing to myself but either way, it works! A simple bun or ponytail with a hint of mascara will go great with the oversized sweater and leggings you’re wearing that day. Every day is a new day and every day is a new look! So, wear that bright lipstick with that bun or wear that beanie to hide day 3 hair! Either way, you look great.

2. It’s okay to have an emotional breakdown

Things aren’t going to be easy every day of your college career, some days it’s going to take all you have just to get to lunch time. Being in college is rough! Things are hard, there is a lot of uncertainty in pretty much all aspects of life as a college student. Some days, it takes just a few tears and a good pep talk to get you through the day. It takes a good deep breath some self-encouragement to get a grip sometimes.

3. It’s okay to drink coffee.

A lot of coffee. Coffee makes mornings easier, and nights calmer. Coffee knows how to handle a very large margin of emotions. It can calm an angry heart or warm a cold soul. It can make the most heartbroken girl smile or the sleepiest student look human again. It does wonders! Coffee is great, whether it’s one cup while you’re getting ready or the third cup to get you through a night of studying. Coffee has your back, no matter what.

4. It’s okay to sleep in on your off day.

Some people think all college students do is sleep but it’s actually the exact opposite. If the student is dedicated to their school work, then they most likely don’t sleep a lot due to studying and reviewing their notes. Sleep is such a nice thing on a tired mind. It makes making choices and functioning in general much easier. So, sleep in on Saturday and don’t feel bad about it.

5. It’s okay to be you.

Whether that means being single or being a loner, you can just be you. You don’t have to pretend to be anyone else, just YOU. Life can be so chill when you’re living life the way the Lord planned for it to be. Life is hard, but not being yourself is harder. So be single and happy until the right person comes in your life, or be the life of the party even if it’s only with your closest friends. Any way you want it, be you.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
