I'm Glad I Chose Houghton

Not Perfect, But Perfect For Me

I'm Glad I Chose Houghton
Ecclesiastes 3:11 Designs

I remember my first week as a college freshman. I was blown away. Being surrounded by so many Christians- a place where people actually know who Lecrae and Hollyn are, a place where we pray before we start class, a place where I'm allowed to create religious projects, a place where I can talk about God freely, a place where no one stares at me while I pray- I was in heaven on earth.

Fast forward to now, the second semester. I've learned that Houghton isn't perfect. No, my utopia is not as close to heaven as it seemed like that first week. But I don't think I'd want to attend any other school. My parents have chided me that I should attend a cheaper school, but the price is worth it in my mind. No matter how many problems may come to pass, I want to stay here. Here's why:

The Values

I always knew I wanted to go to a Christian school. In these few months that I've been attending, my faith has grown tremendously. I don't think it would have been the same at a secular school. At first I didn't think my beliefs would be challenged here- but they are- more than ever before! Christians have a lot of different views. Boy was that a shocker to naive little me in August! But I am so glad that no matter what our differences, we all come together in Christ.

The People

The people here are so wonderful. Students are very accepting, loving, and extremely talented. The professors that I've had have been lots of fun, and always make God the core of their teaching. Instead of treating us like students, they treat us like their own children. It's amazing to be around people who are willing to pray with you and for you at any time. The friends I have made are irreplaceable, and I'm so grateful to God for all the people He has allowed me to meet here.

The Location

I have had some struggles with feeling isolated, that's for sure. It really would be great to have a car so that I wouldn't have to walk 8 miles to the nearest store and back, or have to bother people who do have vehicles to take me shopping. But there is something special about being in the middle of nowhere. It is so peaceful here, and there are so many trails and naturey places that make Houghton feel like a mini Narnia.

The Food

Some people seem to complain about Sodexo, but I think they're pretty great. There's always a good variety of food, and if nothing else- pizza. Not having to cook is really nice. Not having to wait for my food is really nice. Being able to eat as much as I want is really nice. And having some really healthy options is really nice.

The Activities

There is always something to do on campus. Karaoke, ping pong, tennis, skiing and snowboarding, horseback riding, hiking, Bible studies- those are just a few of the many things that Houghton has to offer. I've been amazed that such a small school can keep me constantly on my toes.

Sure, other schools are capable of providing the same kinds of things. But I'm so glad I chose to come here. Houghton is truly Houghme away from home. And I thank God for it.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
