Veteran’s Day has come and gone once again as it does every year. The city was filled with flags and green-lighted porches, free meals and words of thanks. However, were you still as grateful for our nation’s veterans when November 12th came around?
The men and women who serve our country deserve the upmost respect. They have made choices and sacrifices that many could never imagine. So why should we only give our thanks on one day? Here’s several ways you can show thanks and they don’t even have to be grand gestures.
Hold the door open for them when in public.
Although this is (used to be) common courtesy to hold the door open for someone when they’re approaching the door right behind you, going out of your way to do if for someone who’s a veteran can make their day. It’s a small gesture that shows a lot of respect.
Offer to purchase coffee or a drink.
Many times they will decline and say it’s not necessary but it’s the thought that counts. Even if you see them in line behind you at the gas station just tell the cashier you want to pay for their drink. They may not know who you were but they will know they are appreciated.
Say “Thank you”
I’m writing this as a citizen, but I have been with my dad and when someone learns he’s a veterans they often say “Thank you” and shake hands. My father with his pride and humility would often reply “There’s always someone out there who deserves your thanks more.” It’s the simple concept of someone thanking an individual and recognizing the sacrifices they have made.
Often it’s the simplest things in the world that make the biggest difference. In such a torn society it’s important to remind the bravest men and women how much we appreciate them.
To every veteran of every branch I'm here to say "Thank you"
