Giving Thanks In Chaotic Times

The meaning of Thanksgiving is often forgotten in today's society.

It is that time of year again, ladies and gentlemen!

Thanksgiving is only a few {cold} days away, and I can already smell the turkey and apple pie in the air. Yum!

However, the meaning of Thanksgiving is often tossed into the shadows, and replaced by enough food to feed a village and the obvious {and needed} break from school and work.

This year, I urge you to set aside your chaotic schedules and contrasting opinions, and remember the purpose of Thanksgiving. To remember why we celebrate such a holiday, and what it means for us. But most importantly, to remember what you're thankful for.

Since I was little, I would write down a list of things I was thankful for, whether it be a person, life-changing event or just an object. Throughout the years, this activity often reminded me of things I had overlooked on a daily basis or completely forgotten altogether.

As many people have been upset about the recent news these last few weeks, we have forgotten to be thankful for everything we have, including our country and those who fight for our safety.

After reading various social media posts about Thanksgiving, I have created a running list of popular items people are thankful for, despite the surrounding chaos.

Here are the top 6 things people are thankful for this year:

1. Friends

An overwhelming amount of people said their friends were the thing they were most thankful for due to their support and encouragement throughout the years. In fact, many people have said they will be having a "Friendsgiving" on Thanksgiving.

2. Family

Next, based on popularity is family, which includes the categories of husband, wife, parents and children. Family has been deemed second most important due to the constant support and love they show towards others.

Based on that, I would personally like to add grandparents to this category, since my grandparents have been one of the continued blessings and support system in my life throughout the years.

3. Health

The third most thankful thing is health. People have found this worth being thankful for after they have had people close to them experience health issues, or even themselves.

4. Job

Many people have said they are thankful for their job, even if they do not always enjoy it. People who have said their jobs require thankfulness have also said that the roof above their head should be thanked just as much.

5. Life

The fifth most thanked object this year is life. Many people have shared the hardships they have faced throughout their lifetime, and have given thanks to those around them for motivating them during their difficult journey. Also, people have said they often take life and its opportunities for granted due to every day chaos and difficulties.

6. Music and Art

Last but not least is art and music--one of my favorite "thanks" to give. Throughout the stories of hardship and success I have read, people have expressed thankfulness for art due to its impact on their life. Many people have also shared that art, including music, has helped to create peace and calm in their stressful life.

No matter what you may be thankful for, don't forget to take a moment to thank them this Thanksgiving!

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
