The other day, I was arriving at work, and I noticed that on the with strips of paper that could be torn off. All it said was, "Take a Smile". The strips had smiles on them, with cheesy yet happy quotes on the back. I saw that every business in the strip mall had one of the notes on the front doors. Somebody put their time into making little notes of joy for others, without any physical gain. Forgive me for being an idealist and an optimist for a moment, because I believe that people like the "smiler" can change their community with these nuggets of joy. Proverbs 11:27 says, "He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to those who seek it." Let us add some value to the good-seeking people of the world.
Something special happens when we give ourselves to something altruistic.I think that doing good things is symbiotic, meaning that it benefits both parties. It could be called karma, but something good does not necessarily need to physically happen. People feel good knowing that they have made happiness for someone. It is a form of empathy.
But we must also remember that with the ability to create happiness, one can create sadness and bring down someone's day. "You have a great smile" and "Your teeth are crooked" can cause people to be self-conscious in two entirely different ways. A teacher told me something, and I will say it to whoever is reading this: If it is true, necessary, and kind, then say it.
Along with these things, there are other easy ways to make life better, such as:
drinking water
sleeping
counting one's blessings
not procrastinating
constructive thinking
gaining confidence
learning
smiling (more)
being generous
praying
exercising
being present
letting go of what is bothering you
showering with warm water
Often, one will find that they find happiness when they look for it. The same thing applies to goodness. By trying for it, goodness will come, and the attitude that comes from one's effort will radiate to others. This entire article stemmed from one little piece of paper that had me thinking. What can I do to improve the general welfare of my community? Just give a smile and do your best to others.
