Many people wander through life in a constant search for who they are. So ask yourself this, who are you?... Many peoples first thought is their name. But am I really “Kaitlin,” can that really describe who I am as a person? No, so who are you? Now adjectives may be rolling through your head. Some positive, some negative. But is this really you?
Perceptions create reality and therefore our world and our self-image is what we perceive it to be. If your idea of yourself is that you are fat, ugly, and stupid then to you are that. Then in turn, you will act like you are fat ugly and stupid, and therefore become that. Think about it, if you think of yourself as this you may as well think, well I am fat anyway I may as well not take care of my health, or I am ugly anyway so I may as well not put effort into my appearance, or I am stupid anyway so I may as well keep my mouth shut because I’ll sound dumb. But in reality your appearance or your intellectual ability does not define who you are. So damn it, who are you?
Maybe, you are just a person… Okay, so you are a sack of bones that can walk and talk and create things with opposable thumbs? Maybe. Who are you? You are actions, you are your thoughts, you are ideas and perceptions. So you’re completely abstract, nothing concrete? Maybe. Who are you?
Truth of the matter words cannot describe who you are because you are more beautiful and more complex then any word in any language can describe. Yes, your body is a sack of bones, yes, you have actions, you have thoughts and ideas and perceptions but you are more than this. You are energy that can think, move and create anything that your imagination ponders up. You are anything you perceive yourself to be. This is not your definition, because you cannot be defined. I cannot go onto Google and type in “define Kaitlin” and it will give me an answer. I am more than words. I am everything and anything.
TRY THIS.
For the next few days do not judge yourself. Do not feed into those ugly perceptions of yourself. Allow yourself to simply be, to simply exist without any perception or judgment. Don’t try to be anything. Don’t try to be the clown; don’t feel like you have to be shy because you think you’re stupid. Take a deep breath and find the courage to simply be. To exist here in this moment without shame of your past and without insecurities. Just be for “waking up to who you are requires letting go of who you imagine yourself to be” (Alan Watts). Don’t let your struggles fears or worries consume and become you. Be anything you wish yourself to be by imagining yourself to be this. If flowers can be beautiful by simply existing, so can you.
