Everyone has gone through it: You're sitting down, getting ready to write something. It doesn't matter if it's for school, work or just for fun, and you find yourself unable to think of anything to write about. Not only that, but every time you try that trick of just writing down random things until you figure it out, you just can't find anything out of it. This is where I propose just giving up on the writing and giving in to the writer's block.
I don't mean giving up entirely. I mean giving up for a little while, like a day or even just an hour. Sometimes it's necessary to give up for an entire week, but that is only acceptable if your deadline is not within that week.
By giving in to the writer's block, I mean just that. Stop thinking about writing, completely . Whenever you find yourself thinking about what to write about, just stop during the time you told yourself you would stop. I know this may seem counterproductive, but just give it a try. It's okay to think about other things to write about, but just not about that project that the writer's block interrupted you on.
So what should you do while you're giving up and giving in? I would go for a walk, clean the house, play with your pet, read a book. Pretty much any activity you do on a daily basis, just make you make yourself focus on actually doing these tasks instead of just mindlessly doing them. Focus on how the sun warms your back as you walk, or the swishing of the broom while you sweep, the seductively soft pages as you turn them in your book.
As you take the time to focus and think about what you are doing, you will find that, when you are ready to write again, you could possibly have many more little details you can include in your writing. Or, if anything, you will have at least allowed yourself to relax a little bit more.
So next time you're suffering from writer's block, give in to it.
