A while back, I came across an article titled “If You Give A Girl A Brother,” by another Odyssey writer, in which she put her thoughts into a poem about her brothers. Unfortunately, I could not relate to this article, as I grew up having three older sisters and no brothers.
A lot can happen when you have a sister (or multiple). Life for my parents was far from easy having four crazy girls for daughters. But, there’s one thing for certain - I would never ask for anything different.
Here’s to all the sisters out there, and my own twist on "If You Give A Girl A Brother."
If you give a girl a sister, many things become true.
Constant sarcastic remarks, but always following with a “Love you."
A friend wherever she goes, and a backbone in hard times.
She can’t get rid of them, no matter how hard she’s tried.
You give her somebody to look up to, in all of their beauty and strength,
They’ll never know her appreciation for them, they’ll never understand the length.
Nobody will ever realize the bond, between her and them,
If she was in need, no doubt they’d go out on a limb.
You give her a hug when she’s sad, and a funny joke when she’s not okay,
A phone call at 2 am to talk about her bad day.
You give her another number to call when her mom won’t pick up the phone,
You give her a text saying “I miss you” when she feels alone.
Somebody to grow with her, starting with baby dolls and toys,
Then eventually, to warn her about talking to certain boys.
They’ll watch her become her own, allowing her to learn and sometimes fail,
Only to believe her ship would eventually successfully sail.
You give her a voice of reason when she looks in the mirror and says she looks bad,
A giggle next to her in bed, trying not to awake mom and dad.
Don’t forget there will be joking insults galore,
But, a voice that will always remind her “You deserve more.”
Some call her crazy when her ambitions may seem extreme,
But her sister will give her a high five when she pursues those dreams.
A person to keep her company while watching lightning fill up the night sky,
And somebody to tell her she can do whatever in life she tries.
You give a girl a sister, and her parents will never know which one to believe,
Not only this, but you give her the best gift she could ever receive.
You give her somebody that not only shares her pair of eyes, but shares her heart,
You give her somebody that will be there forever, even when they’re apart.
