If You Give A Girl Some Sisters

Just a love letter to my amazing sisterhood

If You Give A Girl Some Sisters
Haleigh Schultz

If you give a girl some sisters…expect her life to change.

My sisters are the best. No doubt about it. Without them, I don’t know how I would function on the day to day. They aren’t only my sisters; they are my roommates, my confidants, and my best friends. The minute I joined, I knew that I made the best decision of my college career. My sisters are smart, they are beautiful, they are hilarious, they accept me for who I am, and I wouldn’t have to any other way.

My little local sorority is by far, one of the biggest blessings in my life. We might not have any other chapters, we might not be able to “throw what we know,” we might not have a house, but I have come to realize, none of that matters. The things that matter most to us, aren’t material. The things that mean the most to us can’t be measured in monetary values; it can be measured by smiles, laughs, and loud screams.

We love when we meet our founding members. We love when we meet alumni that share their reasons for joining and it mimics ours. We love when we meet a new freshman class, and get to see who we think will fit in with us the best. We love the days when we can just look around and realize everyone in that circle will catch you if you’re falling.

Watching that shy girl come out of her shell, watching people who would probably never talk to one another become best friends. Seeing mixes of majors and interests, but still finding that one thing that makes everyone so close. Seeing a sister from fifteen pledge classes ago struggling, but wrapping her up in love, comfort, and support. We will celebrate weddings, we will be aunts to babies, we will throw parties after you graduate grad school, heck we will even help you get your stuff when you dump that stupid boy. I can promise that we may argue, we may get angry, but we will never stop loving one another. We will cry it through the rough patches and rejoice in the exceptional moments. We will be there until the end.

But this is where I have to stop and thank my sisters. To the ones that were there when I pledged in: thank you for believing in me; thank you for taking the time to get me through the pledge process, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to be where I am now. To my pledge sisters: thank you for loving me unconditionally, even when I make it hard; thank you for not letting me quit, and thank you for giving me encouragement in everything I do. To my pledge babies: you will always hold this special place in my heart because without you I would have no use as your pledgemaster; you have shown me how important it is that a little encouragement will go a long way. To all my alumni sisters: thank you for being you; thank you for trusting us with keeping this sorority alive, and thank you for your unwavering support and love through everything.

So, if you give a girl some sisters…expect her life to change forever.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
