As the weather gets colder and the year draws to a close, the winter holidays remind us to be thankful for what we have and the people we get to share it with. This time of year is also the season of giving, and what better way to spread holiday cheer than to give to others! You can achieve the spiritual gift of giving by supporting your local community, giving to those in need, or even sharing treats with your neighbors. Giving comes in all shapes and sizes, and oftentimes does not require money at all. Here is a list of ways you can give back during the holidays!
1. Volunteer at your local food bank
Volunteering at a food bank, or even a church kitchen, is a great way to help those less fortunate. There are many families right in your own community that have difficulty putting a hot, well-balanced meal on the table, particularly those who are homeless. It's amazing to see someone's face light up when you serve them a good meal after a long time without one.
If you don't have time to get to the food bank, you can also donate canned food or other non-perishable goods.
2. Donate a toy
Toys for Tots Foundation has been in existence since the 1940s, giving thousands of children toys since its establishment. Their mission is to bring disadvantaged youth "a message of hope." No child should go without receiving a gift on Christmas. To find your local toy drop-off location, look here.
3. Give the gift of warmth
One Warm Coat is based out of San Francisco, California, and seeks to "provide anyone in need with a warm coat, free of charge." You know how cold it gets around here in the winter time...bone chilling! Clear out your closet of the jackets you don't wear and help someone in need find warmth during this season. If you don't have a coat you can part with, you can also donate money or volunteer. Find out ways you can help here.
You can also donate clothing and other household items to the Good Will, Salvation Army, or even your local homeless shelter.
4. Monetary donations to Salvation Army
I'm sure you walk by Santa Claus ringing a bell every time you go to the grocery store or a department store. Rain or shine, Santa is there! The Salvation Army brings lot of good to this world, sponsoring natural disaster relief on an international level, providing health care to poor individuals in over 100 countries, advocating against human trafficking, and much more.
There are also many other charitable organizations that look for donations in the wake of the season of giving, as well. Find one you're passionate about and give!
5. Write a Christmas card to someone in the military
The men and women in military service unfortunately miss time with their families at home during the holidays, but a sweet Christmas card from a random stranger can make anyone's day brighter! International Business Times released an article outlining where you can send letters, cards, and care packages. Read about it here.
6. Donate blood and save a life
Unfortunately, the holidays are no exception to people falling ill and needing blood transfusions. Another non-financial way of giving is to donate blood at a local blood drive or by scheduling a Blood Donation Appointment. Follow this link to find out where and when you can give blood. You could save a life!
7.Donate blankets, pet food, and pet toys to an animal shelter
Animals shelters and other pet rescue centers are generally in need of supplies for their homeless animals. Get in touch with your local shelter to see what kind of blankets and other supplies they need. You can bring joy to an animal who is still waiting to find their new home this holiday season.
8. Bake cookies or treats for your neighbors and co-workers
Holiday sweets and treats are a great way to spread holiday cheer amongst the people you're close to! A homemade cookie goes a long way during the holidays, showing those around you that you care.
Whether or not you donate money, giving back is a great way to celebrate the holidays. Get out there and celebrate the season of giving!
