Like a number of girls out there, I am not the NBA's number one fan. I'll watch, sure. It's a bunch of sweaty guys running around, all of whom are three times my size. The finals have been going on for the past few weeks, and while I rooted for my own home team, I honestly had no idea what was really going on. Of course, when you watch it in big crowds, more specifically where a bunch of guys are gathered, you are bound to hear random phrases yelled and the holler of joy after a shot is made, but really I was just watching a bunch of men run up and down the court, and I know I'm not the only one. While watching, I may have been physically there, but my mind was packed with thoughts and questions about what I was witnessing, and I know there are plenty of girls who can relate to some of these.
When the game first starts:
"Haven't we already played them?"
"Oh, best out of seven... Is this not seven?"
"This is going to last forever."
When halftime comes around:
"Thank you, geez that was long."
"This is only halfway, oh no."
"I hate those cheerleaders, they're so skinny. Ugh."
Anytime a close up of Steph Curry was shown on the screen:
"Wow, he is gorgeous."
"He makes really pretty babies, bless his wife."
"Look at those arms, goodness."
"I wish he was on our team."
Anytime one of the players wives of girlfriends were shown:
"She is so lucky."
"I bet she has her own shoe closet."
"How did she do it? Girl, teach me your ways!"
Anytime a foul is called:
"What just happened?"
"Do I clap or huff angrily? Was that on our team?"
"What does that even mean?"
"Did he just fall to the floor? Baby."
Anytime a shot is missed:
"Oh. Oh no. Here comes the yelling."
"Don't they get paid a lot of money to make those?"
"Oh that was the other team? Oh, yay!"
Anytime a close up was shown of our players:
"He does not look happy at all, uh oh."
"Westbrook looks like a frog, but he can play basketball so I guess it's OK."
"Ew, look at that sweat. Wash yourself, boy."
"Aw, don't be sad, you will get it next time."
All in all, the game itself is surely intriguing, just not to me. With the finals upon us, the more these questions are likely to happen. Don't worry, it is perfectly normal to not know what is going on. Just cheer and pout when everyone else does and you should be fine. Happy watching, and may you take your cues from a boy who actually knows the game.
