What is Feminism?

There are three types of feminism: white feminism, feminazism, and secular feminism. There are also movements based off of feminism, such as humanism and egalitarianism. As much as my guy friends hate to admit, not all feminisms are created equal. There are branches and waves of feminists that give the seculars a bad name- like feminazis.

"Feminazi" is a term coined by Rush Limbaugh in the early 90s, and is used today by men and women alike to describe not only feminists in general, but a certain type of feminist. However, the (urban) dictionary definition of a feminazi is, essentially, a misandrist. Feminazis believe that men are scum and should be wiped off the face of the earth. This is not my feminism.

White feminism is another term bounced around, but I've only witnessed it being used within the feminist community (misandrists included). White feminism is not a term used to describe Caucasian feminists- but rather, used to describe non-inclusive feminists. White feminists believe that only unoppressed groups of women can have rights- and a lot of these "feminists" put other women down. Remember the Kim K nude selfie, and how quickly Chloe Grace Moretz tried to shut her down for willingly and consensually posting a naked picture on the internet? "I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies" was said in a tweet to Kim in early March. Many women, (regrettably) including myself, attacked Moretz on twitter. And while the instance was a perfect example of white feminism- and how many women will put others down just to build themselves up- that's not what secular feminism is about.

Now, you might ask, what is considered secular? The answer is simple, and yet not. Secular is inclusive. Secular feminism means every woman deserves rights. Even trans women, even poor women, even women who do not believe in feminism. They all deserve to be respected and treated as human because they are human. That is my feminism. That is what I believe in. I always will. Every woman deserves fundamental rights.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
