Netflix’s new series ‘Girlboss’ is a must watch this summer. 5 stars. 10/10.
I started this show because Netflix described it as a girl who started her fashion empire with a single vintage jacket. Girlboss, however, is more than just a cookie cutter transformation story. Based off of the life of Sophia Amoruso, founder and former CEO of the online fashion hub that is ~NastyGal~, this Netflix original loosely retells how Amoruso turned her dreams into reality. It’s so good that you can easily binge watch season one in a day or two (not like that’s what I did or anything…)
Besides the fact that the concept behind NastyGal is pure genius, (“flipping” vintage clothing like people “flip” houses), this show is binge worthy for the characters developed through season one. Britt Robertson absolutely kills her role of NastyGal mastermind, Sophia Amoruso. Robertson delivers a flawlessly cool personality that combines Amoruso's pissed off attitude and heart of gold. Although I found her temper tantrums kinda annoying, you can’t help but want to be friends with someone like her who goes after her dreams so aggressively.
As for the other characters, Roberston’s love interest, played by actor Johnny Simmons, is the perfect example of the guy that you know you shouldn’t like but can’t help it. Throughout the season he exudes charm that will leave you rooting for things to work out with him and Robertson. Another notable character is Robertson’s BFF Annie, played by Ellie Reed. Her bubbly and optimistic personality balances out Robertson’s tough, detached persona perfectly. Robertson and Reed seriously give Blair and Serena a run for their money for #bestfriendgoals
This show will make you laugh, cry, and want to update your wardrobe ASAP. The writing in the show is as sharp as a tack. But what I love most about this show is how everyone can relate to Amoruso’s story. Everyone goes through ups and downs in life. Everyone has dreams that they’re thinking about. But only a few people actually pursue their dreams with the amount of unwavering confidence like that of Amoruso.
Girlboss is fresh, hip, inspiring, and perfect for college girls like me who sometimes need a reminder that your dreams are attainable and valid. So, if you’re bored this summer needing some inspo, watch Girlboss. You won’t regret it.
