I’m A Girl And I Watch Star Wars And Superhero Movies: So What?

Here’s to other girls or women like me who watch and love “boy movies.”

I’m the girl who watched movies “for boys” all my life and loved them. I have tried to watch “Pretty Little Liars,” but I wasn’t interested in those kind of shows. I liked kicking butt and taking names kind of films, or the ones with animals. My movie preferences vary greatly. Some of my favorites include strong female roles. . (Looking at you JLaw, you wonderful and gorgeous gem.) I hate the movies where women are objects or cast to the background. I often recall sitting next to my dad, watching “Star Wars” or “The Mummy” together. Or the times I would watch my dad and stepbrother play Call of Duty on the Xbox while my sister was playing dolls downstairs. “Scorpion King” is a good watch too. (Hello ladies, Dwayne Johnson is in it.) Or any of the Fast and Furious movies. (Again, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Dwayne appears in the later ones of those movies too, looking hunky as ever.)

This is one of the times that my feminism really kicks in. Why must I be called nerdy or a geek because I watch “Star Trek” or the old “Justice League” cartoons? Why can’t this be common, the norm? Sure, I enjoy being a part of Bachelor Nation as much as the next girl. It’s not that I don’t like shows or movies geared towards women, I do. But why can’t men watch any Nicholas Sparks movie and not get called gay? Why can’t women watch any Batman or Superman movie and not be told that they are trying too hard or that they are fake? This isn’t just about movies. It is about anything that is generalized for one specific gender. Comic books. Video games. Music. Clothes or fashion. Books. Instruments. Cooking. Why can’t we, as humans, just let go of these stereotypes and enjoy our lives?

So to those of you who go beyond your gender norms, do what you please and ignore the negativity you’re sure to hear. Make those first strides. Don’t take anything anyone says to heart. Men, you watch those chick flicks while you’re in the kitchen baking an extravagant chocolate cake. Women, you kick your feet up and watch that next superhero movie coming out, or scream and yell as you play Call of Duty. Jump around and dance life’s worries away. We are only human and we only live once. Don’t be afraid to geek out because you’ll be the only one. Grow your hair out super long or cut it short. Go to Comic Con dressed as a Wookiee or as Wonder Woman. If you get flagged as nerdy or geeky, then so be it. But don’t let those gender norms barriers stop you from living your life.

I mean, come on. Who doesn’t like watching futuristic battles in space with all different kinds of races and species coexisting? All fighting for the same cause: to defeat the bad guy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
