I decided to choose my undergraduate major based on something that I enjoyed and loved my entire life; my love for sports. Being an athlete and a fan of all sports I decided to become a sports management student. But it was not until I was officially enrolled that I realized that women were not as respected as men were in this industry.
The sport industry is "male dominated" and that is not okay, it is time for a change. We need to stop using the statements like "you hit like a girl" or "you run like a girl" as a way to degrade people. Because when did "doing something like a girl" become a bad thing? Young girls are told this from the time they begin a sport all the way to the collegiate level of athletics. How do we expect females to stay in such an industry where we are recognized as worthless?
In the past decades the oppression of women has beens swept under the rug, but within the last couple of years, females have worked to bring the feminist movement out and about. Something that has been tucked away for so long.
We need to change the way we see "like a girl." As that statement stands, young girls believe that they are worthless, they loose their self-esteem, they begin to believe that they do not belong in the sports they play. They believe that they can not be involved or participate due to the fact that they may "play like a girl."
It is time for it to be changed. To turn "like a girl" into something that everyone wants to be, male or female, child or adult. To "hit like a girl" to "play like a girl" needs to be associated with having power, being strong and being the best. If we begin to use this in a powerful way, the sports industry will begin to grow as an equal opportunity for both females and males. We need to look to equalize the genders and give everyone an equal shot.
As Barack Obama says "Because playing like a girl means you're a bad ass."
