It's only been a week and a couple days since the 2016 VMA’s on August 28, but I can’t seem to shake the feeling that Fifth Harmony won an award for the wrong song. The girl group, which is known for its girl power anthems, won Best Collaboration for its song “Work From Home” featuring Ty Dolla $ign.
Yes, I get it. I dance and sing along with the lyrics as loud as I possibly can while I am driving down the road. It's a catchy song and I can’t help but like it. The only problem with it is that it undermines girl power!
What happened to the group from 2015 to 2016? The group's previous album, “Reflection” was filled with killer anthems like “Mirror” and “Bo$$.” These songs were about being confident and independent. The songs used to inspire girls to be exactly who they wanted to be, but now the lyrics are about only being confident in bed.
Let’s start with the lyric that would make any powerful woman cringe. “And I don't need no explanation 'Cause baby, you're the boss at home.”
I get that in this situation, the man works to provide for the woman, but that doesn’t downplay what she does. Why can’t they be Co-bosses? Why are they openly saying that the man powers over the woman in this relationship? The idea that the man is the boss and the woman should do whatever he says without explanation, is simply outdated. Society is moving forward, but these lyrics are moving backwards.
Honestly, if she is a stay-at-home wife then she is running that house. Regardless of who stays home, man or woman, the job cares for so many different things that all help the people around them. If anything, she should be saying that she is the boss.
Don’t forget that time when Fifth Harmony said they were going to send inappropriate pictures to their significant another while at work because they want him or her home.
“Put in them hours, I'm gonna make it harder, I'm sending pic after picture, I'm gonna get you fired.”
I just don’t understand how a girl group who sings about being independent and making money can change so much within a year. Now they are singing about ruining a career because of sex. Not to mention the fact that women aren’t just sexual objects. I am all for being yourself and owning your sexuality, but combine these two lyrics and you basically have a woman who waits for her significant other to get home.
Overall the song is super catchy, but the lyrics are what holds back women. In a world where women are fighting to defeat the gender gap, we don’t need young women subconsciously thinking that they should act the way that this song depicts. We want the Fifth Harmony that writes killer power anthem songs back.
