What’s it like not having a soul? Well to be frank; It’s great. As I am letting my extreme anger issues get the best of me, I pillage villages and burn everything in my wake. Being the ugly redheaded step child that I am, I proceed to hide from the sun because my alabaster skin can’t handle the deathly rays. My body that is just doused in freckles really helps to compliment my quirkiness. Really, who wouldn’t want to be a ginger?
Being followed by stereotypes hasn’t taken away from the fact that those with red hair are quite unique given their hair color alone. Redheads make up to 1-2 percent of the world’s population, mostly inhabiting Scotland, Ireland and the United States. The more popular term for redhead, ginger, was coined in 1510 and has managed to remain a part of today’s vernacular. Having this color of hair has sprouted different reactions like appreciation or suspicion in different cultures. Whatever culture it may be, gingers have managed to be rather successful and impact society as a whole. Below are some examples of gingers that stand out.
Emily Dickinson
This American poet, mostly known for her work after her death, actually had auburn hair that turned more red throughout her life. Being quite reclusive, she managed to influence literature to this day. She was bored with conventional ways and strayed from the norm. Must be the ginger in her, right?
Lizzie Borden
Back in 1892, this not so innocent woman murdered both of her parents with an axe. She was tried but acquitted, receiving harsh treatment from people in her town. She remains in culture today in songs and even jump rope. Guess she really did have a temper.
L. Ron Hubbard
Behold, the father of Scientology. This made up concept from his popular Science fiction novels really stuck with his readers to a point where they created a religion out of it. Tom Cruise sound familiar?
Lucille Ball
Not only is she known as Lucy from “I Love Lucy”, she is the first female to star in an American TV show. Her red hair is iconic and she herself acts as a symbol. At one point during her acting career, she dyed her hair blonde (gasp) but returned to her roots. Once a redhead, always a redhead.
Rupert Grint
The Weasley’s knew what was up. All of them fashioned red hair and rocked it in the popular “Harry Potter” series. Rupert Grint, or Ronald Weasley, is an example of just how magical red hair can be. Plus, it is nice to know that gingers can act as major characters.
