Why 'Gilmore Girls' Is Revolutionary

'Gilmore Girls' was a simple WB show that exploded into a cultural phenomenon that empowered women everywhere.

Why 'Gilmore Girls' Is Revolutionary

When I was 10 years old, I discovered a show that changed my life. That show, in all its feminist glory, is "Gilmore Girls." As I grew into my adulthood, the show grew with me, and I began to understand many of the lessons and hardships Lorelai, Rory and Emily experienced navigating multiple generations of womanhood. In honor of the recent Netflix revival, I thought a quick road trip back to Stars Hollow was seriously in order.

1. Mother/Daughter Relationships Are So Important

You can drive your mom/daughter up a flag pole, but you love them unconditionally anyway. Whether you have a relationship like Rory/Lorelai or Lorelai/Emily, the love you have for one another could move mountains.

3. There Is No Place Like Home

via Entertainment Weekly

Whether you’ve had a long day at work or you’re off at college, your home town is so incredibly important. Friends, neighbors, and family will always be there for you to count on when the real world gets you a little down.

4. You Can Get An Education At Any Age

via huffingtonpost

Whether you get into every Ivy League like Rory, or get your associates degree at the age of 32 like Lorelai, education is something to do on your own terms. There is no shame in waiting or getting a jump start. It's your life.

5. Coffee Is An Essential Food Group

via buzzfeed

From the first line of the first episode, coffee is established as its own character. It is incredibly important and necessary for daily survival, and can make any task seem manageable.

6. There’s Nothing Like A Witty Reference

via pinterest & fanpop

"Gilmore Girls" is the epitome of early 2000s references. From N’Sync to Juicy Couture Sweat Pants, "Gilmore Girls" made fast talking wit the new hot girl.

7. Carole King Rocks

via foreveryoungadult

"If you're out on the road, feeling lonely and so cold. All you have to do is call my name and I'll be there on the next train." You can't help but sing along to the sounds of Carole King's amazing voice singing a beautiful and heartwarming melody. The theme song for "Gilmore Girls" provided an entire generation with a feel-good song about love, family, and lasting bonds.

8. Smart Girls Are Cool Too

via buzzfeed

Rory is characterized from the get go as a nerdy smart girl. Most of the time this girl has no friends and no love life, but Rory is just the opposite. She always has a new attractive man, and the entire town of Stars Hollow adores her.

9. There Is Nothing Wrong With An Unconventional Family

via reallylatereviews

In standard television, there's a mommy and a daddy and a daughter in a cute house. Though Lorelai and Rory have a super cool house, they are far from the "average" family. At the time of its premiere, "Gilmore Girls" was one of a kind and paved the way for other programs to exemplify the true modern family.

10. Best Friends Make Great Boyfriends

via moviefone

From day one, most everyone is Team Luke. He’s a dependable guy, there with the coffee and witty counter points to Lorelai’s crazy banter. Their love takes a few seasons to grow, but when it comes, it is as natural as a good cup of coffee.

11. Girl Power

via buzzfeed

This show was truly revolutionary in the way that the women are written as incredibly strong and independent and rarely stereotypical. As a woman, I can appreciate a single mother working hard to provide for her daughter, and taking little crap along the way.

"Gilmore Girls" paved the way for so many empowering women-driven television programming, and stands alone as a timeless piece of history. So get ready to count down to the Netflix revival premiere, for it is sure to feel like coming home.

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
