I don’t know about you, but when I found out there was going to be a "Gilmore Girls" revival, I started shrieking with excitement (see gif below for real-life footage). Over all, "A Year In The Life "did not disappoint but there were definitely some interesting twists along the way. I’ve put some of my favorite moments and plot twists into a review from my binge session. For those that haven't finished, do not worry, though I discuss the overall plot line and surprises, there are no spoilers (only allusions to those last four words.)
#1 Richard's Tribute
So the tribute to Richard (Edward Herman) was incredible. We knew that not having Ed apart of the show would leave a void but you can also see how much his passing impacted each character and it made us miss Herman that much more, (though the giant wall-sized portrait was a tad creepy.)
#2 Emily Gilmore has not changed a bit. Or has she?
When she came downstairs rocking a pair of Lorelei's jeans and a Candies t-shirt, I almost did a spit take. Emily has moments of being her normal, manipulative self but we also got to see her as change drastically over the course of the few episodes. As time goes on, we see Emily dealing with Richard’s death, her eventual separation from the DAR, her uncharacteristically giving nature and long-term employment of Bertha (longest she's ever kept the same maid!), and then she finally exchanges her usual lofers for the Keds. My heart just tore on that one. Well done Em, thanks for finally showing how kind hearted you were all along.
#3 The boys.
The three boys back when they started Rory were dream boats. Now they've turned into full on steam engines.
Dean
Okay so Dean has kids, a wife, and now lives in Scranton. (As in Scranton, PA from "The Office.")
Side note: When he said this, all I could think about was how he could know Michael Scott and the gang and how happy that made me!
Anyway, other than just his address, there was this great moment between him and Rory when she asked to write about him and she said all of those beautiful things. Brought back some fond memories of the good ole' days when life was simpler. There was even that quip about the cornstarch, referencing Rory's accidental shoplifting encounter when she first liked Dean, it made my heart sing.
Logan
Now the Logan and Rory plot line I was not a fan of at all. Dean has grown up, Jess has grown up, but Logan still seems like the same guy we left years ago. Rory as a mistress? That weird plotline with married Dean excluded, this is incredibly un-Rory. I was honestly really disappointed in that one but she finally ended it and hopefully, she’s done with that. But considering the last four words…we’ll see right?
Jess
And then there is Jess. Like OH my JESS. Jess has always been the dark, smart, broody one and now he is even buff and still likes to read! His conversation with Rory was probably my favorite. He reminds Rory that she’s just going through a rough patch and still has worth and even gives her the idea to write that great book. (fingers crossed, they actually make that into a thing). As if that one didn't give you the feels enough, his last scene when looks in the window and shows that he is still in love with her brought back all the feels. Such a great moment for all of the Jess fans out there.
Now what?
While I really enjoyed the revival, I was hoping for more answers. I basically spend 8 hours of my life and didn't get really much summed up at all. There could have been less of that musical (like, what?) and more definite answers, I'm looking at you Sherman-Pallidino!
But, even though there was a cliffhanger and I still have so many questions, it was so nice to see my friends of Stars Hallow again. In the words of Sookie and Lorelei,
"Still best friends?"
"Always best friends."
That being said, I will be stress tap dancing until Netflix decides they will do another season. Because it can’t just be over. Please.
