A Gift from the Gods

There is a time when traditions need to stop

A Gift from the Gods

“This is your royal duty, do you accept?” Her voice was hesitant but firm. I looked at her for a moment. Such an honorable way to say that I am going to die. I couldn’t help but smile, smile at the disgusting course of events life has taken.

“I accept,” I practically snarled. The poor soul didn’t even seem surprised at my sharp tone.

“Then, by the power of each god, I bestow their gifts onto you. For you to use and to fight with. Practice their knowledge, practice their strengths, practice their laws. These powers I bestow onto you, use them to bring honor to your people. Bring honor to your family. Be the first son, in the long line of the Heatherborn sons, to come home victorious,” The hesitation vanished, her voice carried loudly throughout the great hall. Reaching each and every citizen. Applause erupted around us. My people cheering me forward.

She placed her hands on my face, they felt warm despite the negative temperatures our kingdom called home. A ray of sunlight, shining through the panel blinded me. I closed my eyes, letting the brightness shine against my eyelids. She began whispering softly. My bones tingled, like prickles and pins. A warmth blossomed in my chest, I felt a sort of happiness. The bliss was short lived, it was soon replaced a burning fury. Like my veins lit on fire, I was burning from the inside. A distant noise sounded, it took me a moment to find that it was me laughing out loud. I enjoyed this pain, I enjoy this torture.

“My prince? It is done.” I opened my eyes, she had stepped back and was looking up at me with wide eyes. I frowned and cocked my head. “You are now a disciple of the great gods who once walked this earth. Use their abilities to restore the previous greatness our kingdom once had.” I smiled and turned around to look at my people. I didn’t recognize a single one. That’s what I get for being locked up my entire life.

“Ah, yes, my royal duty,” I beamed to my subjects. I was livid to how they cowered behind the old traditions. Throwing every prince they have out into the ring to see which kingdom will rule for the next year. Our poor suffering kingdom has never had the right to rule. “Well, I think I am going to abandon that silly little tradition and make the best of these abilities you blessed me with.”

“My prince?” The woman behind me questioned softly. I turned around, my smile never faltering.

“Thank you for the ability to take back my kingdom.”

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
