Despite the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, the Giants are still in prime position to make the playoffs. But even with the cushion they have right now, there is still a lot for Giants fans to worry about these next few weeks.
First of all, forget about winning the division. The Cowboys locked that up a few weeks ago. Sure there is a small possibility that the Giants can still win the division, but I don’t see the Cowboys going 0-4 to end the season. In fact, I think they will probably beat the Giants next week when they play, and that’s not a bad thing.
Obviously, any Giants fan wants the team to win, especially against Dallas. And the win will go a long way towards securing a wild card spot, but a loss isn’t the end of the world. Think of it like the Giants-Patriots regular season game in 2007. The Giants weren’t expected to win but they put up a fight in a game that meant absolutely nothing. Fast forward back to today and again the Giants are playing a regular season game against the best team in the NFL, and virtually the game doesn’t mean anything win or lose. The Cowboys are taking the division regardless, and if the Giants lose then at worst they are still a game up on everyone for the first wildcard spot.
Where the trouble comes in is after that game. The Giants need to keep the game close to keep their confidence up. A win would be great, and they probably have a better chance than anyone to pull it off, but if they lose, they need to at least make it close. If it’s a close game, then they will have momentum to build off, and a willingness to get back at the Cowboys come playoff time.
Once again everything seems to be falling into place in the NFC East to ensure that the last game of the season is a win or go home kind of game. The Giants could make it easy on themselves and win a couple games so that it doesn’t come down to that, but let’s be realistic. This is the New York Giants we’re talking about. They never make anything easy. Don’t be surprised if they have to play that win or go home game against the Redskins, and if that ends up being the case, I would be very nervous as a Giants fan.
