I wrote this poem when I was a freshman. It was an experiment with a different poem form called a ghazal. A ghazal is a poetic form with rhyming couplets and a refrain, each line sharing the same meter. It is usually written about love, pain or something related. So here it is.
War Wounds in the Dark
The battles I have fought are in the dark
The monsters choking the life from me, in the dark.
The battles have wounded me greatly
But who can see the wounds in the dark?
I carry weapons to combat my demons
They can’t see my arsenal in the dark.
Legendary warriors brawl in the daylight
Unknown soldiers fight in the dark
My battles will go down in history
I will forever fight my monsters in the dark
I pass by fellow warriors in the light
And know the battles they’ve fought in the dark
The loving arms of summer surround me
But I survive the winter in the dark
My greatest fears haunt me in the sun
But my nightmares assault me in the dark
My scars of battles won are hidden away
The light is too harsh, they thrive in the dark
The cries of Grace lead me out
Only warriors know what happens in the dark.
