You better brace yourself, because here it comes and it doesn't have to be hard.

So you’re sitting at the dinner table and the same racist rhetoric gets spewed out of your family’s mouths, you’ve heard it before. The ignorance, the sexism, and the biases; you’ve never known any better but something is different about it this time. This time you reply with an intelligent comment, you say “that’s not funny”, and you surprise them with where your education has brought you. This is what it’s like to grow out of a mind that leaves constraints. This is what it’s like to embrace a mature mind.

So you’re sitting in class and you find yourself five minutes early with your notes out and reflecting on a lesson. This semester you have no desire to sit in the back of the lecture and groan about class being a waste of your time. If fact, this year you've decided you don't want to waste any time, or money for that matter to just sit there and scroll through your timeline. You like what you’re studying and you are excited to excel. You picture moving on to the next step, and are willing to get serious about it. This is what it’s like to be driven and centered.

So you’re sitting at your meeting, one in which you serve an elected position. You give your feedback, help those around you, and sometimes lead the discussion. These things become less scary to you every day; you don’t shy away from it- it's the right time to get to know your comforts and your strengths. Positions and opportunities of this kind guide you towards where you will find yourself in a post-grad scenario.

So you’re making weekend plans with a group of people. You find yourself longing for the way to express your desire to get closer to the ones you like, create friendships and bonds, and most importantly take care of yourself. There’s something absent about the nights of getting trashed with those you don’t really know. Let that inner desire speak and make those connections, feel sound in surrounding yourself with ones that love and care about you. You are beginning to understand the complications leaving those who don’t behind, don’t fear embracing that.

You compliment yourself on your ability to buy and make a meal for the evening; you keep your health in mind and listen to what your body is saying to you. This is one of the most important relationships that you can keep with no bounds.

You know that even the smallest of victories are important. This is maturity, this is growing. The mindless, pesky, little issues of immaturity will leave you, you're in control of this life and prosperity lies ahead. Get to know the real you, get the know the grown you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
