All About Me!
Nicole Steplewski

If you had to explain yourself to someone new in 20 words or less, what would you say?

Music is a huge part of my life. I'm fascinated by oceans and aquatic species. I take pride in heritage.

Why did you start writing for Odyssey?

I love the idea of being able to openly express my thoughts and opinions about any topic I desire. That is what drew me in in the first place. The community is caring and respectful and it just truly is a wonderful site to write for. I am honored to be a part of it.

It’s one thing to sign up for an opportunity like this, but it’s another thing to stay committed and give it your all. What has kept you writing for the team?

The reaction from friends and family when my articles are shared on social media gives me the motivation to keep going. Their support and their interest in my articles make me more and more passionate about the next topic I write about. I would not be able to do this without their support.

What would you tell someone who is interested in writing for Odyssey? Any words of wisdom you have? Any warnings?

I would tell them that this definitely is a fantastic experience and one worth looking into. Phoenixville has an extremely creative team and we are always looking for fresh minds. It is a good idea to look at your teammate’s articles and see what their styles are like and what they write about to possibly give you ideas for your next article. A warning would be to remember the deadlines and to not procrastinate.

What’s your favorite article that you’ve had published?

My favorite article is a tie between Cultural Acceptance and Saving Our Planet. Both are topics I am widely passionate about. One is more well known and the other is pushed to the side. These two topics have the power to drastically change our world in positive and negative ways and that is what makes me so attracted to them.

Would you ever let someone in your life design a tattoo for you, and would you get the tattoo done without knowing what it was? If so, who and why? If not, why?

I would not let someone in my life design a tattoo for me. For a couple years now it has become apparent to me that I think differently than most and no one truly understands my thought processes. A tattoo is a permanent and a huge commitment and I only trust myself on a decision on the design and the placement.

Which TV show or movie cast do you wish you could be a part of?

I would most definitely be a part of the Sherlock television cast. The show is so unique from other crime investigation shows and has an interesting plot and unique selection of actors. The actors chosen all fit their roles incredibly well and it would be an honor to work with the interesting diversity of people involved in that series.

If you could live in any time period, when would you choose? Why?

If I could live in any time period, I would live in the time period I currently live in. I was born in this time period for a reason and I don’t think it would be wise to alter the past or the future by switching to another time period. Even the tiniest change could cause a huge difference if you do not belong in that time period. Although experiencing life in another time period would be fantastic, I don’t believe it would be wise.

Which fashion trend of the past or present makes you cringe the most? Which one do you wish stayed around or became more popular?

The fashion trends of the 1970s make me cringe the most. The bell-bottom pants and the assortments of bright colors terrify me and make me uncomfortable. My favorite trend from the past has to be turtlenecks and I wish they would make a bigger comeback. They are extremely warm and with today’s styles, they could be a huge, attractive sell.

Would your five-year-old self be happy with your current career choice? Or did you have a different idea of what you wanted to do when you were younger?

My five-year-old self wanted to be an astronaut. However, I believe that if I was five, I would be extremely happy with my career choice in Environmental Science. I am working on saving the planet and finding ways to become more sustainable in every part of our world. My five-year-old self would be proud of me for being passionate about saving our planet.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year?

I'm most excited to start my first year of college. I am extremely excited for the independence and the chance to learn what it will be like to have significantly more responsibility. It will be an amazing learning experience and I can’t wait to learn more about independence.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
