The debate between Mac and PC has been going on for decades and will never come to an end. Most of the time the choice comes down to personal preference. When it comes to engineers the debate tends to shift towards the side of PCs. Before entering college, I needed to get a new laptop and my mind naturally said PC. But, after hours of research and computer configurations, my decision of getting a Mac has been the best decision I had made so far. Most assume macs are the pretty boys of computers but with many improvements over the years they offer much more than expected.
One of the most common misconceptions is “Macs can’t do everything a PC can.” But, as of 2007, Macs can do just about everything a PC can with a software known as Boot Camp. This allows you to be able to run either OS X (mac) or Windows (PC) on your computer at anytime. One can have all the feature of a mac but still be able to run all the programs of a PC. This is a feature that PC’s do not offer as they are not able to run OS X. One may run into the question of where to get the Windows operating system and how much would it cost. But you will have to look no further as at most universities, it is offered for free and can be downloaded in a quick and simple manner.
“Macs are not as powerful as PCs” but as Dwight Schrute would say FALSE. Macs are just as powerful if not more than PCs. They are able to run at 2.6GHz and clock out at 3.1GHz and one can even upgrade to higher speeds. They also come with all the other necessary features needed to run intense programs such as 8GB of ram, a solid state drive, and a crisp display to view images and videos at 1440p. So before just jumping straight towards PCs when wanting to become an engineer, take a step back and look at everything the competition may have to offer. It can be a great investment as they are designed to last and will catch all eyes with the beautiful aluminum body.
“Macs are way to expensive.” Most of the time it is our parents who are buying the computers and most want to buy a reliable computer that will get them through all four years of undergraduate studies. Most assume macs are too expensive to afford in which most immediately revert directly to PC’s. But, over the year the price gap between the two flat forms have decreases as technology continues to grow. Most that have had a PC before know the same issues always begin to occur after around a year. Macs tend to crash less frequently and are not susceptible to the blue screen errors. With macs usually out lasting PC’s by a year or two if not more sometimes, one can look at buying one as an investment that will pay itself off over time. And nowadays like many other companies, Apple offers a student discount and other various promotional deals such as a free pair of beats when buying one of their computers.
So before saying, “I can’t buy a Mac, I want to be an engineer.” Take a closer look at all they have to offer as with the many changes that Apple has made over the past several years there is much more than meets the eye.
