A year ago, I was studying for finals, writing out essays upon essays, and wondering whether or not to transfer from the college I was attending. For me, choosing a college was not easy, which can be proven because I chose my college on May 1. When I first came to Fredonia, I was really, really unhappy with my choice, because there was literally nothing to do on campus. Now looking back, I see that I made a huge mistake thinking that, because I wasn't willing to break out of my comfort zone and try new things.
This year, I wanted to make sure I was busy, but not too busy, meet new people and join a club. On Activities Night here at Fredonia, tons of clubs set up tables right outside the gym, and you walk by each of them and see which one catches your eye. For me, I already knew that I wanted to join the TV station here on campus, because it was something I was really interested in and wanted to pursue after college. So, my friend and I signed up and a few days later went to their open house. We went through each area of the station, they showed us the control room, the actual studio and set and afterward, we were allowed to sign up for a TV show we wanted to work on each week. Knowing literally nothing about any of the shows, we signed up for a late night talk show that aired on Wednesday nights. Little did we know that it would become one of our favorite places to go each week, with the funniest people, and be the chillest environment.
I’m not gonna bore you with some sappy story of how much I love the station and the show I work on, but tell you why you should get involved in something you love on campus. After weeks and weeks of going to the station, working on the show and meeting new people I started to love Fredonia even more. It gave me something to look forward to each week, even though we didn't get out until midnight some nights or shows didn’t go perfectly, it was still fun to be a part of something that I really enjoyed doing and being around people who also enjoyed it too. So if you were like how I was a year ago, join a club on campus. And if you think there is none that you're going to enjoy, then choose one that you know nothing about; give it a try, whether that be Greek life, a language club or a sports club. Whatever it may be, find something that challenges you and opens you up to new experiences and people. It looks great on a resume, teaches you time management, you make new friendships and it helps you find out what you really love. It makes time at school not feel like work, and it will only make you more appreciative of what your campus really has to offer.
