Fighting the Monotony of College

500 Words On Getting Involved

When writing, I always try to leave my audience with something practical. If you read some piece of writing and don't become more informed, I believe you have wasted your time. I have no idea who will stumble across this article, but if you do happen to keep reading, I know you will leave with some insight at the very least.

We are more than half way through first semester. At this point, classes seem monotonous, routines have been set, and friendships have been made. The more and more I talk to people, the more I hear "I am bored," or "My life is stagnant." Some friends have even thought about transferring this upcoming semester or year. Maybe you can relate, I know certain aspects of my life have felt dull and repetitive lately.

The biggest thing you can do to make life in college more exciting is to get involved. With a little initiative, you could change the rest of your semester. There are several hundred organizations on every campus. I promise there is a club that matches your interests. If there isn’t, you can start your own. Be a part of something bigger than yourself. Don't sit in your room and binge-watch Netflix. Maybe you want to join an organization that is centered around your major? Possibly a religious organization? Potentially you want to go Greek this upcoming semester? Start by attending a weekly meeting and checking it all out. Go to a mixer or large event with a friend. College has it all, and it is never too late.

Disrupt your natural tendencies and make yourself uncomfortable. If you don't continue to diversify yourself, life will seem motionless. Keep an open mind. Get out of your comfort zone. This is usually when you the grow the most. At first, do not fear overexerting yourself; however, keep in mind that you can only dive so deep with so many things. It is better to be heavily involved in one, than a casually attendee at three. Find that balance. If you are not getting anything out of a certain area in your life, than why stay complacent? Rise up!

When you do find something that does challenge you as an individual, seek leadership. Work your way up the ranks, and put yourself in the opportunity to implement your own ambitions. This will keep things interesting, and allow you to pay it back to someone in your shoes a few years down the road.

Follow what you are passionate about and never settle in college. If you do, you may fall short of your potential. Do not become a worse version of yourself.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
