Madeon and Porter Robinson are finally going on tour and dropped a new song together. I don't know about you, but I am freaking out!
Porter Robinson first made his debut as a four-on-the-floor club banger prodigy at the age of 18. After releasing the OWSLA-backed Spitfire EP (2011), performing numerous global festival DJ sets, co-headlining tours with Zedd, and the release of "Language" in 2012, Porter made headlines that he was done with club sets. Playing numerous DJ sets took a toll on his desire to perform, and he yearned to play all-original music. As a result, Worlds was born, and it was a glorious statement of electronic free expression and originality that he brought into the world.
Madeon, another youthful prodigy, hails from France and is widely considered the next electro heir up with Justice and Daft Punk. After a series of hot singles,
including his smash-hit, “Pop Culture,” his full-length debut
Adventure was released in 2015.
Long-anticipated after his string of DJ tours and singles,
Adventure debuted #1 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Spot. I had
the pleasure of seeing him play at Webster Hall along with The M Machine on his
debut world tour (with Porter Robinson in attendance), and he absolutely slew it.
It makes perfect sense that these two set up to collaborate with one another. Both have become somewhat Anti-EDM heroes who, by going against paint-by-numbers club anthems, have redefined what festival music can aspire to be.
"Shelter" is one of those rare gems where you can pinpoint each person's impression and contribution influence at any time. Madeon's vocals play nicely alongside Porter's backdrops. Madeon also nails the verse sections adding in brilliant progressions while Porter comes in slamming with the chorus. In a way, these two seem to be a perfect match for one another in style, composition, and technique.
"Both Porter and I started working with people in-person when we started making our respective albums and appreciated how much more collaborative you can get," said Madeon in a press statement. "Our intent was to make music that would reflect our friendship."
"I see enthusiasm and inspiration as the most important currency you can have when you're making music," Porter added in the same statement. "It's this weird sensation of being drunk on your own confidence and excitement that leads to so many creative breakthroughs. That effect was really exaggerated when we were working together."
17 tour stops have been announced so far, with more on the way. Their double-headlining tour will consist of them playing at the same time, re-imagining each others' discographies live and mashed up. The possibilities are endless here, as they both have incredible live DJ skills; imagining them doubling down sounds wild. No word on if they'll create an album out of all this, though we can all certainly dream.
