Silence surrounded us as we made the long walk back to the hotel from the stadium. The weather was perfectly miserable and cold and rainy. My Dad, my brother, and I were in shock after seeing our team give up 31 unanswered points to the Oregon Ducks in the first half of the Alamo Bowl. It wasn't supposed to go this way... two years of dominance from Trevone Boykin, Kolby Listenbee, Josh Doctson, Aaron Green, and the rest of the TCU Horned Frogs were supposed to end with a ring, not a blow out defeat in San Antonio Texas. Although I pleaded with my Dad and brother to stay for at least one more quarter, the obnoxious Oregon fans that surrounded us became too much, so we left the stadium and sulked our way back to the hotel bar. Then, the second half started.
To this day, I fail to really understand how TCU, led by back up quarterback Bram Kohlhausen, went on to score 38 points in a row to win the Alamo Bowl in triple overtime 47-41. I remember the anxiety as many of us TCU fans who left the game early huddled together and watched the miraculous comeback on the TV in the hotel bar. I remember constantly telling myself not get too excited because the odds of a comeback were so low. Finally, I remember the entire bar, now packed with 50+ people, going nuts when the Frogs finally put away the victory in triple overtime.
As college football fans, moments like the one in San Antonio is what we live for, whether you bleed purple, green, burnt orange, or maroon. Now, as the 2016 season draws near, I can only imagine what new moments we have in store for us. Everybody has questions that need to be answered -- Will the University of Texas finally break it's trend of mediocrity? Will A&M transfer Kenny "Trill" Hill be able to lead TCU to another bowl victory, or even a spot in the playoffs? Will Deshaun Watson get his Heisman and lead Clemson to a national title? Will Baylor football be relevant again, outside it's sexual assault scandals? Will Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield's chlamydia flare up again? Will UTA's football team continue it's trend of not losing a game since 1985? Will Kirk Herbstreit ever stop talking about Ohio State? All these questions and more are about to be answered. So get up and get ready! Because it's (almost) game day again!
