Ghandi stated, “If you do nothing, there will be no result.”
To many these words emanate great meaning. Philosophers, politicians, authors--they all did something that caused them to be famous in our society. But did they do nothing? Did they make results? To the majority of the world, people say, "Yes, they did," because actions that motivate people in society influence the world, influence us to do things just as great.
I feel, however, that nothing is something. The workers in a labor union do nothing when they feel they are underpaid or are treated unfairly. To the boss of the workers, they are doing nothing by choosing not to work. To the workers, however, it really is something to put pressure on the management and not work. They truly draw attention to themselves and the issue they are addressing.
That is what is important. Making yourself heard and getting people to listen; for, from listening, we can get results. It becomes a moving prospect to act towards those that are fulfilled by getting results and making a difference through actually doing something. This is the human collective. Some philosophers say helping the world, educating oneself to the fullest or being active in work fulfills one’s life.
I say what you do is fulfilling when you make a difference based on how you view the world. No one should say whether or not you are fulfilling your life. You decide that.
Making a difference means a plethora of things; it is in the eye of the beholder.
All I ask is to not sit on your couch eating potato chips and call that something. Being engaged and involved in society is something and is part of who we are as people. People create communities who help each other out and provide guidance and aid when needed...but if we create aid that stab each other in the back, that is when a difference should be made.
A selfish, irrational person who is only in this world to benefit themselves causes problems in our society, and so an issue arises to someone else who believes they should change it. The reality is if they want the issue to become a solution, then that someone must have a voice and speak up. A voice leads to an action. Just like the renowned authors, politicians, activists and philosophers we look up to.
