Over the past year, I’ve managed to contract everything from the flu (or other variations of it) to bad cases of allergies. Thankfully, I’ve been able to recover every time and have gathered some tips to share with you all in case you ever get sick in college.

1. SLEEP!

Try your best to get 8-9 hours of sleep, even if it means going to bed at 10 or 11. Also, take naps throughout the day, and just try to take it easy. Your body will thank you.

2. Drink a lot of water

Yes, you’re going to have to use the bathroom a lot, but the idea is for your body flush out whatever is giving it trouble.

3. Take medicine

Robitussin, Aleve, Benadryl — whatever you have on you, take it. Use your own judgment, however, and be careful when mixing drugs.

4. Drink soup

The great thing about college dining halls is that soup is usually available. Take advantage of this offering.

5. Tell your friends

I’ve realized people are much nicer when you tell them you’re sick. If you have met decent people in college, they will do their best to take care of you when you are sick.

6. Tell your parents

I know college is supposed to be the time when you’re finally independent. However, nothing really makes me feel better when I’m sick like my family. The good thing about Rutgers is that a lot of people live close to home. If you are really feeling wonky, call your parents and have them bring down some home remedies. Or, you could just spend the weekend at home. Both achieve the same effect.
