To the Person Who is in a rut and just Needs to Get Motivated

Because motivated people are the happiest people.

We've all been there, when we wake up in the morning with a long to-do list, knowing that each item needs to be completed, but having no desire or motivation to get out of bed and actually completing these things. Procrastinating and putting things off is ok sometimes, but sometimes, it's easy to set a goal for ourselves, and not make any strides or effort towards completing this goal, pushing the achievement of this goal off to the point where it never gets achieved.

Sometimes, it's difficult to find ourselves getting motivated to do simple tasks such as completing a homework assignment, working out, going to work, the list goes on. With motivation comes passion to get motivated.

I'm not saying that in order to complete daily activities you have to be passionate about every single thing you do, obviously, we don't look forward to completing a 10-page essay. However, if we take a step back and look at the bigger picture, it becomes a lot easier to get motivated to do what needs to be done. That 10-page essay that has to be written is probably a pain and may seem pointless now, but getting an A on that paper will help you to get an A in a class which will help boost your GPA which will help you get into a better graduate school, etc. Even if that paper is on something that happened in Rome in 400 BCE and you have absolutely no interest in this topic, remember that you don't have to be passionate about this in order to graduate with good grades, it's all contributing to the bigger picture, this alone will motivate you more than you know.

Another way to get motivated is by finding things that you are passionate about. More often than we may realize, we find ourselves doing things for other people that may fulfill the hopes and dreams they have set up for you, or doing something just because all of our friends are doing it. It is more difficult to get motivated about something that other people are passionate about if you yourself aren't passionate about that thing. Of course, it's great to be a selfless person, however, when it comes to your own hopes and dreams, find the thing that you love to do. Once you find a hobby, major, or activity that you love to do, all of the other things you have to do during the day will seem like a piece of cake because you'll have that one thing, or more, that you love to do to look forward to, almost like a way of rewarding yourself.

If it becomes hard to motivate yourself in any capacity, try to re-evaluate the goals you have for yourself, maybe they really aren't the right goals for you, maybe you don't care enough about fulfilling those goals to actually do anything about reaching them. If it's time to re-direct your life, do it! Whatever it takes to make you happy and successful in anything and everything you do.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
