Why You Should Read The Skimm

Staying up-to-date on the world around you isn't nerdy, it's necessary.

Why You Should Read The Skimm

First of all, I should say that this is not a sponsored post. I want to clarify this because I am about to talk about how much I love this newsletter, and I don’t want you thinking that I’m getting paid for it. I have street cred to maintain.

So what is The Skimm? It is a daily newsletter that tells you everything you need to know about the news around the world in short and clever paragraphs. It means that you can learn all you need to know about what is happening in the world from just a few emails. This means that you can be up to date on the news without sitting through a super long news story, or a bland article.

One thing I love about The Skimm is that every news story is clear, but witty. This might lead you to giggle as you learn about the presidential race or as you search for more information which, of course, they will help you find by supplying links, on things like the economic crisis in China. Oh, you didn’t know that China is having a serious economic crisis? Well, because of the Skimm, now you do!

It is also awesome because it was started by two, 20-something women who decided that the average person needs to know more about the world. They knew that people are often lazy, or have a short attention span, so they set off to create a newsletter that updates you on the world in just a few minutes.

This newsletter is super helpful for keeping up with the world, but is absolutely necessary for public relations, journalism, political science, international studies, business, finance, or any other college majors who might need to be on their game. Often, classes within these majors, especially ones that cover historical events or news, will include daily quizzes covering current news. I signed up just weeks before taking Intro to Journalism (shout out to Dr. Broadway -- you are the bomb) and man, I did not regret it.

In addition to the academic benefit of this awesome newsletter, there is a social benefit. Often, you will over hear conversations about what Kim K has been up to, or the crisis in Greece. Some might sit back and not join in because they know nothing about the subject, but with the Skimm you can join in and give insights and opinions on current news.

I might sound a little like an infomercial, but I do love the Skimm because it has seriously helped me keep up with what’s going on and get better grades in classes. I look forward to my Skimm reading session every morning during the week, and after a year of reading this I am still crushing strong on it.

So, if you're ready to get to know the world better, go to theSkimm to sign up and start learning as early as tomorrow.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
