As my first year at GW comes to an end, it is time for me to reflect on my experience here at the university & in DC.
When I first toured George Washington, I knew the university was the one for me. Its live & open campus characterized by masses of students taking on the streets of D.C. was something I wanted to be a part of. The urban setting of the university was perfect for my wandering, adventurous mind seeking to find satisfaction in the most abstract things at times.
Coming to the university was a dream come true. I made friends as soon as I step foot on campus, made connections with colleagues, and learned from the best professors.
Little did I know, I would change my academic interest from pre-med to political science and from then, I’ve been more excited about what my major has to hold in the future for me. The transition to political science, especially being in D.C., was a move that has transformed many of my preconceived notions about government and has peaked many potential opportunities for me down the line.
Going to college in Washington D.C, itself, is a blessing. In the District, I feel like I’m at the center of the world due to its federal and international significance. Through the interactions with various people, it has opened my eyes to a larger scope of the world forcing that me to mature. Being here at such a young age, I know my future is bright because of the people I will meet over the next three-plus years as well as the things I will learn about our country, world, and so forth.
Being in D.C. is a privilege, but it also takes a lot of growing & maturity to thrive here. The active streets of the city at times can be overwhelming for young people and those not use to city life. Living here has definitely made me more aware of my surroundings and of others as I never had to much of this problem back home in Atlanta.
While there are aspects that I do not particularly agree with at GW, such as it’s lackluster meal plan and its emphasis on Greek life. The university provides a community for everybody through various clubs, committees, & safe spaces by having a diverse student body filled with students, faculty, and staff with various backgrounds & interests. GW is also flooded with experts in every field and has faculty members wishing to see students succeed, which can be a boost for those with low self-confidence.
As this semester ends, I am very sentimental about this benchmark in my life. It’s amazing knowing that I have made the right choice in my life considering my own background into the equation. Freshman year is only the beginning, it’s going to go up from here and I’m excited about that. Hopefully Fall 2018 has even more in store.
