This has been an ongoing disaster, investigation, etc. No institution is perfect, and USC is more than worthy of being scrutinized. I think going to a notoriously rich kid university has the tendency to teach you that money can fix everything. Coming from the non-rich kid, you learn that money cannot fix everything --including, but not limited to, your moral compass.
I think that USC has the potential to travel leaps and bounds into the future. We've done some great stuff and some not so great stuff. The Dr. Tyndall scandal is more than a "whoops," on the part of USC; it was calculated and left to be forgotten about. However, as a student body and a woman who uses the health services department on the regular, we haven't forgotten about it.
The settlement has been recently announced, and now it's like, where do we go from here? As a university and as a student body. More specifically speaking, how do we learn to trust our university again with such little time left?
What the settlement does, from my perspective, is it puts a price tag on a student's well-being. And I almost wish it were that easy, but money is only a band-aid to a past trauma. At the same time, I understand that there is no true stitch for a wound this large. But at the same time, settlement checks seem like blood money from USC.
It seems like the administration got off easy. And overall, it just puts a bad taste in my mouth.
It's lovely to be able to be here, but honestly, it's bittersweet when you seem like a pawn in a drawn-out game of chess. We're in a constant state of construction trying to right the wrongs of injustices we didn't commit. And I almost believe that this is a generational thing from a general standpoint.
We're in a cycle. It's pretty much doomed to be endless until we seek out more proactive solutions. We're in a time of healing, as a community. But the administration isn't allowed to be in on this. Basically: How are we supposed to cleanse our system, and fix the problem, when we still have the issues in positions of power?
I guess that I can't give you a better solution. I don't have better ideas. However, USC will always have pockets full of money. This settlement is nothing but a drop in the bucket for them. And if we're not careful, it will just turn into yesterday's news until it happens again.
