The Geneseo Bell Situation

Dear Town of Geneseo,

I know that you hate the college students, but think of me more as a member of your community than a college student for just a second. I live off campus, a luxury to many juniors and seniors at this university. Like many other members of your town, I pay my bills and contribute to our local businesses. I attend my classes everyday, I study and do homework the majority of the time I am not at class or on campus events, and, when I find the time, I like to spend time with my friends. Most importantly, though, I enjoy my time to sleep. My apartment is quiet most of the time. Three girls under one roof with all different aspirations makes for a quiet living environment. This is something that I enjoy. So when there are bells going off every single hour on the hour and ringing the amount of times for the hour I am less than pleased.

Seriously, this bell situation needs to end. There is no reason that I need to be notified at midnight, 1 am, 2 am, etc. that I am still awake when we have something called clocks. Maybe in the olden days ringing the bells was necessary to let the town know what time it was, but it is not anymore. We have cell phones, clocks, computers, watches, etc. that tell us the time when we need it. I shouldn't wake up at 3:55 to get water, and know that I will not be able to fall back asleep until way after 4:00 because the bells will be going off any minute.

Now, I know you're thinking the bells are apart of our history, or something along those lines. That's totally understandable. The bells can ring, but there is no need for them to ring every single hour all night long. From 11 at night until 8 in the morning is a time for peace and quiet. Maybe some college students are rowdy at this time, but for the most part they are not surrounding you. Their drunk walks home on Main Street or to Mia's or Pizza Paul's or UHots are contributing to the town's businesses. The bells are making me aggravated and keeping me awake. I know that I am not the only one who thinks this.

The worst part about the bells is that they are not coming from one source. There are MULTIPLE sources of these bells. Campus has bells that go off, the churches, and town hall. It is absolutely ridiculous how I can not escape them. The worst is, they aren't even in sync with each other. One goes off a minute before the hour, some go off on the hour, and then my personal favorite, one goes off three minutes after the hour. So as if I didn't have to listen to the bells go off once per hour, it's multiple times.

This may sound like something so miniscule but it's actually the biggest nuisance I have encountered. Please think about this and possibly adjusting the bells.

Sincerely,

A girl who just wants to sleep through the night

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
