We are the generation that are told our whole lives that we could do anything we wanted in life. We have the whole world at our finger tips, being told we could have anything. Naturally, we wanted everything. We became the generation that wanted everything, and wanted to do everything. Some people may call our generation “the lazy generation.” We want the greatest reward with the least effort possible. Maybe lazy isn't the correct terminology for us. We just know that there are better options in the world. For example, when it comes to a job, why would a millennial want to settle for something they do not enjoy doing at low pay when they have been told their entire life that they have the world at their finger tips? They know there is something better out there; something they will enjoy, something that will even pay better. Why settle for less?
Our generation also gets easily bored. Boredom and laziness could go hand in hand in a sense. Since we easily bore, it may seem we just aren't dedicated and driven. The problem with that is we actually are dedicated and driven people, just when it comes to doing something we love. We spent our childhood playing every CYO sport possible because our parents wanted us to be the perfect, most well rounded child in the neighborhood. Some of us may have been forced into activities, while others may have already had this want for doing everything at a young age. Either way, we were doing everything physically possible. I know I started off as a little four year old playing three different sports, taking dance and gymnastics classes, and being in the girl scouts. Eventually as time went on I dropped everything I did not have a passion for and pursued only my true passion for dance. Sure I had a commitment to my other teams, but why would I keep playing if I was not enjoying myself and it was taking time away from the activity I truly enjoyed?
We are the generation that invented FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). We need to be everywhere, we need to be a part of everything. Growing up our parents would give us the line, “Well if your friends jumped off a bridge would you?” Honestly maybe; what if I’m missing out on something fun that is underneath that bridge? I would hate to miss out on the fun if it was presented to me. We do as much as we possibly can, even if it is not always physically possible. We just make it work. We want to go to school, work part time, be involved in school activities, hold leadership positions, go out and let loose. Yes this sounds crazy, but we somehow make it work. We think we can do everything and we do, but we like to maximize our enjoyment so we do the things we like doing. Life is short and us millennials know that. We want to live our lives to the fullest and enjoy ourselves. We pursue only what we want and are passionate about. We are not a lazy generation, just misunderstood.
