Let's Put An End To Gender Roles
Quinn Dombrowski

Boys cry. Boys hurt. Boys have scars. Boys have pasts. Boys are allowed to express emotion. Boys are allowed to wear pink. Boys are allowed to wear makeup. Boys are allowed to wear nail polish. Boys are allowed to enjoy feminine things. Boys are allowed to have long hair or even dyed hair. Boys are allowed to prefer music over sports. Boys don’t even have to like sports at all. Boys are allowed to pursue careers in fields such as cooking, acting or fashion design. Boys don’t need to have masculine bodies. Boys are allowed to choose not to be sexually active. Boys are allowed to kiss boys. Boys are allowed to prefer personality over appearance.

Girls are allowed to enjoy sports such as wrestling or hockey. Girls are allowed to wear as much or as little makeup as they desire. Girls are allowed to wear absolutely no makeup at all. Girls are allowed to choose not to shave their body hair. Girls are allowed to have short hair or even no hair at all. Girls are allowed to prefer suits over dresses. Girls are allowed to wear baggy clothing. Girls are allowed to have small boobs. Girls are allowed to be masculine. Girls are allowed to curse. Girls are allowed to have tattoos. Girls are allowed to have piercings. Girls are allowed to stand up against their oppressors. Girls are allowed to pleasure themselves. Girls are allowed to openly talk about sex. Girls are allowed to have as many sexual partners as they desire — without feeling ashamed. Girls are allowed to kiss girls. Girls are allowed to say no.

If an individual identifies as a certain gender, then he or she is that gender. Regardless of their behavior or appearance, their identity is valid. Period.

We as a society need to start searching for internal approval rather than external. We are not slaves to society, and we cannot be reduced as such. It would be a complete waste of life to become exact clones of other beings. It is the unfortunate truth that most fall victim to society. We become emotionless robots. We are stripped from our creativity and forced to comply with societal norms. But the truth is, we can rise above it. We are so much more than those meaningless stereotypes which society has placed upon us. We have so much more to offer this world. We must break free from the chains that paralyze us. We have the potential to become such magnificent works of art, but only if we allow ourselves. I refuse to become yet another carbon copy of someone else. I refuse to lose myself.

We are individuals. We are not slaves. We have a voice. It’s time we show the world who we truly are.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
