This is probably a touchy subject. As Americans, some children fell through the cracks and some adults had awful things happen to them. We make excuses, but we are to blame for a lot of our problems as a society.
Three year old children punch their school teachers. They climb up on things and hurt themselves multiple times, but when their parents see it they laugh. Their kid throws a fit and the parents ask the teacher how they chose to discipline their child, not even mentioning talking to their kid about it later.
Middle school and high school kids do whatever they want. They are handed an iPhone at the age of eight and are just expected to be wise with it. They wear what they want because "it's the style". They have a free ride from mom and dad.
College kids are a weird exception to the rule. Some of them are down to earth and grounded. Others run wild and do whatever they please, regardless of laws and rules. They are broke, and sometimes stealing is the only way to make it through.
I'm not saying this is the wrong way to be. You do you, America. We have many issues with people thinking they should just be handed everything. We wonder why a whole generation believes they are entitled to things. I'm just saying, when you get handed everything you ask for at a young age you think you should get everything you want without necessarily working for it.
I've talked to so many people who are just given things. Money, cars, cell phones, jobs, a college education. Adults my age have a car, and their parents will just buy them a new one because their kid likes that kind of car. Money is just thrown around, and spent like it was never earned. Jobs are stupid when you can just ask mom for money. We show up to high school and just sail through and expect to get in every college we applied to.
While we have this generation of entitlement, we also have people who fight it and go against the grain. I'm twenty-two years old. I've never had my own car but when I do, you can be sure that I will be paying for it. I earn the money I have with jobs, even when I was in school. When I go to buy something, I decide if it's worth it based on how many hours I had to work to earn it. When I don't have a job, I don't know what to do with myself. I will be paying for my entire college degree and my masters degree, also. I didn't expect to get into college, I worked for it. There are plenty of Americans just like me.
You get what you give. I'd rather look back on my life and have worked for everything I have than had been handed it. Struggles give life more meaning, being entitled and getting whatever you want with no effort is easy and, quite frankly, boring.
So, "Generation Entitlement", think about your life. Are you okay with just sitting around and being given things, or do you want to earn and appreciate everything you have?
Things are much more enjoyable when you had to work hard to get them.
