Anything can happen once upon a con…
When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

From the title, you might already guess that this novel is a Cinderella retelling, kind of. Then what makes it different from other Cinderella retelling? Here it is : the power of fandom. Geekerella is no doubt a delightful treat to all of fangirls and fanboys out there. And not just one particular fandom, but a lot of different references by different fandoms.

The story began with Danielle – Elle, to be exact – as our main character. Like any other Cinderella retelling, Elle has a horrible stepmother and two stepsisters. Between the chaos at her home and her job at a vegan foodtruck called The Magic Pumpkin, Elle needs an escape. Our Elle here is a geek, obviously. And a dedicated one, that’s for sure. She is a loyal fan to Starfield, just like her dad. Starfield is this show from her dad’s age. And although Starfield doesn’t have that many episodes, it has a dedicated fanbase, Elle and her dad being the two of them. She’s so dedicated, even Elle has a blog about Starfield where she writes her opinions about each episode, and her newest post talking about her hesitation about the lead role of the new Starfield remade movie, Federation Prince Carmindor.

Then there’s Darien, America’s teen heartthrob. He’s about to begin his career as movie star actor, from being just a soap opera actor called Seaside Cove. And not just a movie, but a Starfield movie. Ever since a kid, all Darien wanted to do was to play his favorite character from his favorite show, the one, and only Federation Prince Carmindor. But being the soap opera actor that he was, the Stargunners – Starfield’s (diehard) fans, have a very little faith that he can pull off a legendary character like Carmindor. Not only he has to deal with high such expectations, he has to attend this year’s ExcelsiCon. Sure, he loves coming to ExcelsiCon, but as a fan, not an actor who plays Carmindor with a chance to get roasted by the Stargunners.

Started with a wrong number, next thing we know Elle and Darien are texting each other. From full-on nerdy texts to personal ones, we follow the journey of how two geeks falling for each other.

I love love love how to read a Cinderella retelling come together with a fandom world. What an idea, right? And it was written beautifully! Poston’s writing style is easy to read, but so beautiful at the same time. I found myself flying through words after words without realizing what time it was (I stayed up until 4 am just to finish this book, which is so good!).

The story itself might come across as cheesy as we all know the main plot and feels a lot like fanfiction with the relationship of an ordinary girl and a famous boy. I get the A Cinderella Story played by Hillary Duff and Chad Michael Murray with the texting and stuff. But there are still some twists and turns that will make you unconsciously on the edge of your seat. When I was reading this book, I gasped and closed the book a lot because I need to take a moment and prepare myself before I continue reading.

This book is by far my favorite read in the year 2017! I can relate on so many levels to Elle, being a geek and a fangirl myself. I just love the storyline, the idea, the characters (except her stepmother and her stepsister whom I love to shove their head down the toilet😊), the fandom references, everything really!

I will say this if you consider yourself as a fangirl, do yourself a favor and read this amazing book right away! Happy reading!

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
