As a photographer, there are many different things you need. To start, you're going to need your camera and a lens. Today I'm going to share my top 8 gear essentials I love to shoot portraits with (but can still be used for other types of photography)!

1. Nikon D810 or full frame camera of your choice.

This camera is one of many cameras that you could choose from!

2. 85mm f/1.4 lens.

This lens is the best for portraits, but can be used for just about anything.

3. 35mm f/1.4 lens

This lens is an essential for every photographer and can also be used for just about anything.

4. 24-70mm f/2.8 lens

This lens is specifically for landscape and portraiture; it's an amazing lens to have because of the versatility the zoom permits you to capture.

5. 70-200mm f/2.8 lens

This lens is for long distance shots; whether that's for photographing animals that are far away, a fashion show where you don't have the best view or a sporting event, this is the lens you MUST have!

6. Reflector

A little extra light on your subject never hurt anyone!

7. TTL Speed light Flash

This light can be used just about anywhere and also is key when you want to add an unexpected pop of light into your photographs.

8. Backup Batteries and Memory Cards (CF/SD)

You should always have backup memory cards and batteries because you never know what might happen.

9. A positive and curious attitude!

This is what always keeps me going and inspiring new photography ideas.

When shooting, you never know what obstacles and opportunities may arise which is why I always carry backup batteries and memory cards. I love to shoot using prime lenses because it forces you to compose your shots more critically than if you were to use a zoom lens.

On the other hand, I love to carry a zoom with me because it gives me more options when shooting video & hard to reach spots. That said, a flash and reflector are used to bounce and fill light onto a subject when you want to get rid of shadows.

Lastly, entering a shoot with a bad attitude will affect the success of your photographs. You should begin by getting your client to feel comfortable with you so you can capture glimpses of who they are in your photographs! If you have any questions about gear, free to contact me!

    Happy shooting!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

    1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

    And so it begins.

    1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
