Gary Johnson: An Alternative To Clinton And Trump

Last week, it was confirmed that Hillary Clinton will be representing the Democratic Party in this year's presidential election against Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Although some people are inspired by Clinton making history as a female presidential candidate, many people, like me, are not happy with the two candidates that will appear on the ballot in November. However, I am here to tell you that you do not need to settle for Clinton or Trump; there is still hope to "make America great again" and it begins with the third party candidate, Gary Johnson.

A former Republican governor of New Mexico (1995-2003), Governor Gary Johnson is the 2016 presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party. For those of you who might be unfamiliar with the Libertarian Party and its views on politics, in an interview with CNN, Johnson described a libertarian as someone who is "fiscally conservative" yet "socially liberal," creating a common ground for both Republicans and Democrats. In this interview, he also explains that he believes in a limited government -- one that gives people the freedom to do what they please as long as it is not detrimental to society.

More specifically regarding some of the issues, he supports the legalization of marijuana, he believes that women should have the right to choose, he wants to reorganize our strategy against ISIS, cut military intervention, he supports a free market and he does not believe in income redistribution. Being that some of his political standpoints are liberal while others are conservative, Johnson can more greatly appeal to not only Independents, but also Democrats and Republicans who are unhappy with their party's candidate.

This year will not be the first time that Johnson has appeared in a presidential election; Johnson was also the Libertarian Party's candidate in 2012. In that election, he made party history by receiving 1 percent of the popular vote in the general election (about 1 million voters). However, he will most likely make party history again in this year's election. In the Fox News Poll released on June 9, it was found that Johnson is already pulling 12 percent among voters nationwide.

It has already been confirmed that Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson will appear on November's ballot in all 50 states. Being that there are still almost five months until Election Day, it will be very interesting to see how Johnson makes his way into the presidential race against Clinton and Trump.

Make sure to stay tuned to this election and all the drama surrounding it but, most importantly, make sure you get out and vote this November!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
