Games That Set The Mood

Discussing the importance of atmosphere and aesthetics in video games

I'd like to talk about some games that expertly blend gameplay, stylish art direction, and atmosphere. These are all things I consider important elements that make a memorable video game.

I'll come right out and say it, SOTN is one of my favorite games ever. I'd easily place it in my top 10 games for a myriad of reasons. Composed by industry veteran Michiru Yamane, SOTN boasts a wonderfully diverse soundtrack that ranges from classical (here's one of my favorites) to hard rock, to smooth jazz. For a game that came out in 1997, the visuals hold up beautifully. The Gothic art direction is backed up by incredibly well animated 2D sprites (see below).

You'll get lost in this game, not because the map has a confusing layout, but because you'll be so invested. The game has such an alluring atmosphere that it can be hard to stop playing at times. There are so many environments in Dracula's castle that are so skillfully rendered that sometimes you just have to stop and take it all in. The game is available digitally for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for $9.99. Worth it!

This indie gem was created by the one man team of Jasper Byrne. You find yourself barricaded in an apartment complex after a mysterious viral outbreak and your mission is to search the complex for any remaining survivors.

First thing, play this with a good set of headphones because Byrne blessed this game with phenomenal sound design. Enemies groan in pain as they shamble towards you and give off this uncomfortable gurgling sound after you take them down. Byrne also composed the game's soundtrack and he sure does show off his musical range. The soundtrack does a masterful job of simultaneously providing the player with a sense of hope/safety and bleakness/futility. This little indie horror game is available on Steam, PSN, and the Wii U Eshop between $9.99-$14.99 if you want to check it out.

I'm going to be real with you, this game is only on the list solely because of my own self-indulgence. I love this game so much so please ear me out! If I had to choose my favorite fighting game of all time, this game would definitely be a contender. I can't tell you how many hours I've put into this game, not just because it's fun, but because the game is such a pleasure to look at and listen to. I personally think this is the Capcom fighters, both in game play and aesthetics.

The stages are vibrant and gorgeously rendered, character sprites are detailed, attack animations are fluid, and the soundtrack is so catchy you'll probably find yourself listening to it in your car (seriously it's that good, here's a playlist ). The game is available digitally on PS3 and Xbox 360 for $14.99. A remastered version of the game will also be included in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection for $39.99.

Each of these games excels in presenting a distinct style alongside a fun game play experience. Hopefully, I've convinced some of you to check out some of them out!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
