Game Of Thrones from Two Perspectives

Comparing the events and emotions from season one to season six

!!SPOILER ALERT!!

As a huge Game of Thrones fan, I have a pretty good track record when it comes to recruiting new fanatics of the show. Recently, I had the unpleasant opportunity trying to explain the “hold the door” memes to a few friends that weren’t familiar with the show. While I doubt that any of my blabber made sense to my friends, I got one of them hooked. She’s only halfway through Season 1 and refers to Tyrion as “the half man” and has the biggest crush on Khal Drogo. As my friend Erika experiences these events, I can’t help but think back to how I reacted to events that are now minor in the grand scheme of things. I decided to compare the reactions and emotions of viewer on Season 1 to someone who has been keeping up with the new episodes.

Here are some of the responses:

Who is your favorite character?

Erika:

Khaleesi aka Daenerys Targaryen. Erika is attracted to her character because of her beauty, her dragons, and the fact that she is married to the “hottest character in the show.” Erika noted that Dany can be passive and submissive but is watching her grow into “a powerful, fierce, strong independent woman." “But in all seriousness, she’s such a badass.”

Grace:

Grace’s favorite character is Sansa Stark because her story is the “most real” compared to the other characters. Her determination and her strong will to overcome adversities are the traits that Grace appreciates most about Sansa.

(Erika still hates Sansa)

Update me: what big event has just occurred?

Erika:

In season one, Ned Stark has just been beheaded and Arya has dressed up as a boy and is headed toward the wall. Erika really wants the Starks to win the war against the Lannisters. John Snow is about to go North of the wall and she reminds us that “Winter is coming.” Because Khal Drogo has just died, Khaleesi’s dragons were born and Erika is convinced that she is a dragon too.

Grace:

According to Grace, the biggest thing that has happened in season six is Dany declaring herself overruling Khaleesi. She believes that Daenerys is becoming a hug threat to the Iron Throne now that she has the Dothraki, the Unsullied, and other strong militia on her side. “I’m so ready to see how she plans to reclaim the land and name that are rightfully hers!!”

Who are you shipping?

Erika:

Gendry and Arya… (LOL!) She believes that these two could share a bond similar to that of Mulan and Li Shang. I’ve actually never heard of this ship but I guess I can back it… However, if Erika had to choose a favorite couple at the moment it would be “the half man and his whore” (Shae), and due to her love for Khal Drogo, she really adored his relationship with Dany.

Grace:

Brienne of Tarth and the wildling Tormund. Briemund! If you missed this sexual tension the past few episodes, we have not been watching the same show. I, personally, can’t decide if I think they will fall in love or not.

What do you see happening in the future?

Erika:

“When is Joffrey gonna die? I hope all the Lannisters die except the half man! The Starks better win this war against the Lannisters. I think Khaleesi will take the Iron Throne eventually and Arya’s gonna be a badass we already know it.”

Grace:

“We can expect at least one main character to be killed off and a lot of war. All I am hoping for is that Arya isn’t actually dead and someone freaking kills Ramsay!”

It was really fun to see how these two Game of Thrones fans are thinking differently after seeing specific episodes, especially seeing the opinions toward specific characters because some of them have changed so much since season one!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
