Galentine's Day: one of the greatest holidays ever brought to us by the small screen. In the words of Leslie Knope of "Parks and Recreation," "Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and we kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies." Galentine's Day celebrations are often associated with being single and wanting to celebrate with your single lady friends, which I think is quite unfortunate.
Galentine's Day should never be reserved for people who are lacking a romantic Valentine. I have a valentine, but Galentine's Day is still my favorite day. I love being able to celebrate the important and influential women in my life, like my mom, friends and sorority sisters. I like to take the day to send messages reminding my friends how much they mean to me, as well as how awesome they are. Even when I was single, I never used the day to mope around, eat ice cream and watch sappy rom-coms on my couch, because that's not what Galentine's Day is about.
Galentine's Day is meant for celebrating all of the awesome and bad a** women in our lives, which includes ourselves. So, take the day to celebrate yourself and the women around you. Go to dinner, get breakfast, watch a movie, take a bubble bath, have some wine, do anything you want! The only important thing is that you take the time to sit back and realize what you have going for yourself and the women around you who make you the person you want to be.
No matter your relationship status, you should be celebrating Galentine's Day; and, single ladies, don't count your not-so-single friends out of a Galentine's Day celebration. Galentine's Day has nothing to do with our relationship statuses with a romantic partner, but rather our relationship statuses with our lady friends. As previously noted, Galentine's Day is about "ladies celebrating ladies," so let's all celebrate together, single or not.
