What You Gain When You Join a Sorority
personal

If you're thinking about joining a sorority when you come to college, or if you are already in college and you just now have decided to rush, I know you are full of questions and you seek answers. I wish I could answer all of your questions, but instead, I'd like to just give you a heads up about what you get when you join Greek life.

1. An increase of friends/Insta followers

From bid day and on, you will meet every single person in your chapter, and you will try to learn all of their names. I'm just going to tell you that even if you don't learn them all and you don't think you ever will, you are wrong. Now, you might not be BFF with every girl in your chapter, but you will have some that will change your life. Don't be afraid; introduce yourself.

2. An increase in "stuff"

I'm sure you have heard of Big/Little week. This is not a joke or something the sorority takes lightly. You will be showered in cute things and t-shirts, and you will literally sit there and have to plan out where you need to put it all. By the end of your first semester in your organization, your collection of stuffed animals and paintings will double, and all you will be able to do is smile about it.

3. A Ritual

Every sorority has Rituals that the founders created for the organization, and the coolest thing is getting to be a part of it. Rituals are secret and unique to their organization. Sharing ritual with other people is so special, and it shows you all the ins and out about what your organization is founded on.

4. A Philanthropy

Each sorority has a national philanthropy that they raise money for every year. Not only do they raise money, but sometimes chapters volunteer to go places that involve their philanthropy and lend helping hands and help create smiles for those who need it most. Greek life raises millions of dollars annually to support all kinds of other organizations. This is something the Greek community is passionate about, and every member is proud to participate.

5. A Family

I know I mentioned earlier that you gain friends, but you also have to remember that they aren't just friends, they're family. I have 89 girls in my chapter that I could call on anytime for anything, and they would be there. When i'm heartbroken, I have my sisters to mend it. When I need someone to go eat with me in the caf, I can always count on someone to go with me. If there is ever a problem, I know my girls will back me up and kick butt where it seems fit.

6. A Home

It's not just a house, it's a home. It's a place to find refuge and a place to feel safe. Being surrounded by people that love you feels so satisfying. When you go home on the weekends from college, you miss your girls. You always wish you were back with each other again and that you didn't live so far away from them. It's a bond that is just unbreakable.

From the outside looking in, you could never understand it. From the inside looking out, you could never explain it. Going Greek was the best decision I ever made, and I can honestly say that it has made me who I am today.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
