What You Gain From Going Greek

Because it is so much more than the stereotypes.

Along with everything, there are stereotypes and stigmas associated with Greek Life. Nonstop partying and paying for friends are just a few of the long list. When I was a freshman, I blindly believed all those stereotypes, did not think too highly of Greek Life and I had no desire to find out what it was really all about. However, sophomore year, after a year of not being able to find a comfortable place on campus, I decided to go through recruitment and see if I liked it.

Surprisingly, I loved it and could not be happier with my decision. Before I talk about all the great things that Greek life has to offer, let me tell you about the amazing girls you will meet if you decide to rush. They are that shoulder to cry on, that ear to listen, that advice you need at 3am and that hug at the end of a rough day. They are the girls who can make you laugh until your stomach hurts, who are there encouraging you when you are struggling. These girls have become my best friends and I would never have met them if I had not rushed. They make a huge campus feel smaller, they make it feel like home.

As if the bonds you create aren’t enough, the opportunities you get from your organization never stop. Philanthropy events are my favorite because they are so much fun and they contribute to the bigger picture. The different philanthropies range but each organization has at least one philanthropy that they raise money for. The fundraisers are always a good time and everyone comes together to participate and support each other. From obstacle courses to dessert nights, to throwing pies at your best friends – philanthropy events are great. There are always community service opportunities as well to get more involved within the community. Many of the girls that I know volunteer at nursing homes and after school programs for kids. Greek life is always giving back to the community and participating in service.

Sure, it is not for everyone, but Greek Life has had such a positive influence on my college experience. I can't imagine not having these girls by my side every day. If you are unsure about rushing, then just simply try it out, because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
