Lady Gaga's halftime performance during the Super Bowl was filled with sparkly outfits, intense dance moves, and some of her biggest hits.
While I watched it with some friends, we brought up how talented she is, but also how her toned torso looked great.
Sure, Lady Gaga gained weight since her mainstream debut from 2008, but did that take away her talent? Did that take away from her performance? Is it even realistic to expect someone to look the same after almost a decade?
Exactly. We know the answer is "no" for all of the above. Yet, somehow, people decided to body shame her.
Lady Gaga has always taken pride in being a different type of popstar. She's different from others because she doesn't belong in Silicon Valley. She's about being real. She's about embracing ourselves. She's about embracing our differences.
This is her response, as seen on Instagram, to her body shamers:
"I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I'm proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do. I could give you a million reasons why you don't need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That's the stuff of champions. Thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys. Xoxo, Gaga"
Body shaming needs to stop.
Obviously, those who are impressional could easily think "well if she's considered 'fat,' then what am I?" Additionally, body shaming promotes the idea that there's a "perfect" or "ideal" body by putting others down. And who wants to be insulted for insecurities one may already have? I know I don't.
Instead of body shaming, let's focus on who we are inside. Let's focus on the positives about us. Let's focus on what makes us unique.
When in doubt, one should go by the old rule... if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. For now, we should go "gaga" for Gaga, and promote acceptance instead of body shaming.
