To My Future Little

A letter from your future big.

To My Future Little
Jaime Shaffer

To my future little,

I don't know who you are yet and I won't for a few more months, but when I do I'll know every little thing about you. Favorite color, favorite food, and the list can go one. I am so excited to expand my family line, I've only been waiting over a year to do so. Being a new member of a sorority is the best six to eight weeks of your membership within your organization. One of the best parts is getting your big and becoming a member of a family line. My family line is crazy, but I know you'll fit in perfectly.

Although summer vacation has just started and won't become your big until the fall, I have been crafting and saving small things here and there for a while now. There is a basket full of crafts sitting in my closet waiting to be given out. I have and still will try to perfect each and every craft that I make so it is worthy enough for you to hang on your dorm walls. The amount of letters I have already made to be sewn on shirts for you is countless.

I want you to know that you can come to me whenever you need anything. If your pledge sisters and you are having trouble and need advice, come to me. Need help for an exam? Let's meet in the library for a study session. If you want to cry because of a broken heart, come to me. If you need me to get you at 2 in the morning, call me. My big has done those for me and it's time I do them for someone too. If you want a coffee date to catch up, let me know so we can schedule a time and place. You can count on me for anything.

I hope you love our sorority as much as I do and I hope you love wearing our letters across your chest. I can't wait to see you grow within our organization by becoming a sister, taking on positions, and so on. I cannot wait to call you my sister. Lastly, I cannot wait to meet you the day you get your bid and the day that you become mine.

TLAM,

Your future big.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
